I am...

This is the first session in the physical studio for the year which is run by our tutor Nick Deakin. For this particular task I had to come up with the end of a sentence and this being 'I am"... / the whole phrase could only be in 16 characters (letters) which was one of the only rules / guides that we had to adhere too. Once we had thought of the phrase we than had to create a typeface for this. Instead of creating this digitally, we started off on paper first. This allowed us get our ideas down quickly and even if they were rough sketches it allowed our minds to wander.

For this particular task, I wrote down as many phrases I could think of that best represented me as a person and as a designer. When I finally got to a phrase that I was happy and comfortable with, I moved onto creating type that would visually represent it. I felt that it was important for the typeface to express the meaning of the phrase so that this involved with considering the shape, composition and style for the type.

The words / phrases that I thought would be the best and I finally settled on the word being 'hoarder', I typically hoard most things but the most I do tend to hoard are receipts. I thought that this went well for me and as Nick was walking around and looked at everyone's phrases, he liked the concept of mine being a hoarder. He also thought of using the receipts as the basis of the typeface too, which I thought was very interesting. Since that I have put my receipts into 2 boxes and anything else that I went to keep for sentimental and memory value.

SECOND TIME:
For the second time we met for the 'I am' Challenge, I brought in my sketchbook to create the type into. However, everyone else was using paper for this lesson as we had to create our type from last time into larger font. That was my mistake by bringing in my sketchbook, as for each letter we created, we needed to create a larger scaled version of each.

As I brought my sketchbook I carried on creating the larger type in this, which didn't phase me at first however, when being told that we had to put the font on the floor and see how our much larger font looked like. I panicked. My work was all in my sketchbook. I used the entire sketchbook too, for this typeface work, I didn't want to pull the pages out so I scanned them into the computer and printed them out and saw how it look all as one piece of text.
Overall I really enjoyed these sessions as I really like the art of typography. I enjoyed the freedom and the creativity value of creating type. I also liked how freeing creating my typeface was, as I thought hoarders are typically messy, I wanted to use a flourished font for my work, sort of as a juxtaposition.
