1912: The french have a hand in Africa, as well as Italy and England

Ottoman Empire sided with Germany in the first World War. At the end of the War they then split up.

Syria was run by French and Iraq was owned by Britain.

Second World War occurred. Israel was 'created' from Palestine.

Arab States (around Israel) went to the Soviet Union for weapons. USA (anti-communist) backed Israel, but because they were anti-communist.

The world runs on oil, virtually all transport is oil based, and all products have at least been touched by oil.

Oil - refined is a convenient way to store and carry energy. If it switched off overnight it would cause serious issues.

Oil resources issues - not as clear as to how much is left!
